Chapter 18 of Genesis contains two major turning points in the life of Abraham: the first, the promise of a son and heir to Sarah, the second, a challenge to Abraham to negotiate with God about the life or death of an entire city. The first is treated with a certain light-heartedness and even humour, the second, shows the courage and persistence of Abraham, but also reveals an unexpected understanding of God’s way of operating in the world. We will follow the changing moods of the writing and their echoes in the Tanakh.
