HHD Appeal 5786

Our focus on social action, and seeing our place in the world as an obligation to help others, is core to FRS.

Through our High Holy Day Appeal we support 8th Rung's partnership with Kisharon Langdon, and New Citizens' Gatway, as well as Wellspring , FRS Cares and Keren B’Kavod. All of these charities and projects offer us an opportunity to make a significant impact, and to embody the essence of Tikkun Atzmi, the repair of ourselves and Tikkun Olam, the repair of the world.

8th Rung
Eighth Rung is our FRS social action group that was set up to build a longer-term relationship with charities to enable them to do something different with the money that we can raise for them, and to facilitate volunteering opportunities as well as fundraising.
In 2023, the 8th Rung group launched a new three-year programme with two charities: New Citizens Gateway and Kisharon Langdon. This will be the final year in the latest 8th Rung cycle and partnership with these charities.

8th Rung supporting:

1. New Citizens' Gateway (NCG)

NCG works with refugees and asylum seekers in Barnet. It helps over 2,000 people a year to integrate into British life, and supports their physical, social and mental well-being.
NCG uses funds from FRS to support their provision of English as a Second Language to their members. In addition to this, the FRS building has been a sanctuary for many of their activities throughout the year.

2. Kisharon Langdon (KL)

KL provides education and support for over 450 people within the Jewish community with learning disabilities and autism. FRS provides funding to support a specialist work and learning coach.

3. Wellspring

Wellspring is an initiative established by our Rabbi Emerita Miriam Berger, to offer a preventative and therapeutic approach to good mental health, promoting acceptance, and incorporating mikveh (ritual immersion) into marking milestones and recovery.
Last year’s contributions from FRS have enabled Wellspring to create a comprehensive business plan to ensure its viability upon opening. Wellspring has also been able to begin conversations to secure a site on which to build the mikveh and the Wellspring organisation. Preparations are underway for a major fundraising campaign required to outfit the building and cover initial startup expenses.
In addition Wellspring has begun some pilot programming to give a taste of the work they will be doing when they open.
Follow Wellspring on facebook and Instagram @wellspringuk.

4. FRS Cares

FRS Cares offers financial assistance to members and their children when their own financial circumstances would otherwise prevent them from participating in activities that reinforce Jewish values. Examples of how this funding is used include financial support for a support worker during summer camps, and bursaries towards RSY Netzer - Shemesh, Israel Tour and Gap Year programmes.

english 2.jpgKeren b’Kavod

Keren B’Kavod, the humanitarian aid and social justice division of the Israel Movement for Reform & Progressive Judaism (IMPJ), launched several initiatives to assist evacuees and vulnerable populations impacted by the conflict following October 7th.

They provide practical and spiritual aid to evacuees in hotels, operate special workshops and activities for seniors, children and youth, hold women’s empowerment circles, educational trips, and holiday events. In southern cities like Ashkelon, Ashdod, and Sderot, Keren B’Kavod runs resilience workshops and therapeutic support for displaced families returning to an unrecognizable home. Keren B’Kavod also continues humanitarian aid efforts, providing individual assistance and supply packages, focusing on weaker segments of society such as new immigrants, the elderly, and low-income families. Additionally, Keren B’Kavod supports new arrivals from Ukraine and Russia, who escaped one war only to find themselves in another.

All funds raised will be allocated in the following proportions:

8th Rung 70% (NCG & Kisharon Langdon)
Wellspring 10%
FRS Cares 10%
Keren B’Kavod 10%
