A community journey to Prague and Říčany, the former home of our Czech memorial scroll.
Join the FRS clergy for an unforgettable community journey to Czechia, learning about the past, present and future of Czech Jewry and honouring our community's special connection to the town of Říčany.
Our travel together will include:
-
Guided tours of Prague Old Town and the Jewish Quarter. Visiting historic synagogues and learning about life in Prague before and during the enlightenment and before and during the Shoah.
-
A special day in Říčany at the invitation of the Mayor and the town's leadership. We'll lay a special plaque together, care for and lay Stolpersteine, learn about the town and its Jewish community, and commemorate together with today's local community, who care for their memory.
-
Kabbalat Shabbat in the stunning Spanish Synagogue, one of Prague's architectural highlights and a former Reform Synagogue. This beautiful choral synagogue is once again home to progressive Jewish life after renovation and restoration.
-
Shabbat morning services together with the Ec Chaijm community of Prague.
-
Havdalah at a beautiful viewpoint overlooking the city at night.
-
Group meals over Shabbat
Our trip will run in parallel to the FRS teen trip to Prague, and the adult group will be joined by FRS teenagers for Shabbat and for our journey in Říčany.
What does the trip cost?
In order to make the trip as accessible as possible, the trip fee is only the land costs of our time together, enabling members to choose how they want to travel to meet us in Prague, and where to stay according to their budget. This means you will make your own way to Prague, ready to begin our time together at 9.30am on the morning of the 9th of April, and also book your own accomodation and transfers.
There is information further down about suggested accomodation in a very small radius meaning we can all meet and travel together easily.
The cost per adult is £250.
What does this cost include?
Tour guides and facilitation, entry fees to historic buildings and synagogues, meals over Shabbat (excluding breakfast), travel to and from Říčany.
What isn't included?
Meals aside from Shabbat, flights and hotel costs, airport transfers, your own personal travel insurance.
Is there any financial assistance available?
At FRS, we never wish finances to be a barrier to participation. For a confidential conversation regarding this, please email subscriptions@frs.org.uk.
Where should I/we stay?
We are suggesting that all participants stay close to each other so that we can meet and travel easily together. The following hotels are in close proximity to each other (and to where our teens are staying) and offer a wide range of accomodation including multi-room apartments for those who'd prefer self-catering and shared accomodation with others. There are many rooms on Airbnb and hostels also available in the vicinity.

What about flights or other travel?
We ask that you plan to arrive in Prague in time to meet the group at 9:30 am on Thursday 9th April near the recommended hotels. If family or work commitments mean that you need to join us later, you can also do that but the land cost remains the same. We will finish our time together at 4pm on Sunday 12th, in time to make a flight any time after 6pm. You may wish to extend your time in Prague or Czechia beyond this time and are welcome to do so.
Why this trip and why now?
Caring for a Czech Torah scroll from a community that was destroyed during the Shoah is a huge privilege. FRS has built a relationship with Říčany, the town our scroll is from, and their Mayor and leadership have travelled to FRS for the chaggim and for our Czech scroll Shabbat. By returning as a community to visit the town of Říčany with our scroll, we have a unique opportunity to ensure that we know about the people who once read this scroll, and the people who now live in the town have the chance to connect to Jewish life and a modern Jewish community. Our trip will allow us to see the Shoah in the context of the wider story of Czech Jewry, and to also build connections with the growing progressive community in Prague who are writing a new chapter in Czech Jewish life.
