The FRS/Moss Hall Child Poverty Initiative
Helping families avoid hardship over the holidays this winter – donate a ‘weekly-food-shop’
Context
The financial impact of COVID-19 poses an unprecedented challenge for many low-income families.
We are working with a local school to support a number of families who will struggle this winter over the school holidays.
Our ambition is that these families should have a fridge and cupboards full enough to feed their household during the school holidays.
Our ethos for this project is that we want these families to have the autonomy to choose their own food - to suit their preferences and tastes as well as their dietary requirements.
The families
The school will identify families in need who want to be part of this project. These are families who don’t qualify for the vouchers that Barnet Council are providing but are still in need.
These families have the option of participating in the project completely anonymously, or giving their names so that an assigned ‘buddy’ from FRS can be in touch with them.
The families will be invited to write their ‘wish list’ shopping list – what they would want to be able to buy if money wasn’t impossibly tight. In addition, they will provide some information about the family, their ages etc.
What will we provide for the families?
Families who wish to remain anonymous will be provided with one ‘shop’ on the last day of term (18th Dec). They will pick this up from the school. The school will provide a profile of that family and their shopping list.
Families who feel comfortable to give their names and addresses, will be able to receive two separate weekly-food-shops during the school holidays (w/c 21st Dec and 28th Dec).
The families will provide their shopping lists – but you are welcome to add things to this – treat them as you would your own family!
How can you help?
We are looking for people to take on any of the following aspects for the families:
1. Buddy up with a family to do their shopping and deliver it to them (either once or twice during the school holidays)
2. Donate funds (e.g. it may be that you wish to support the project but you are shielding)
3. Shopping & delivery (you may be able to spare your time rather than your cash – if you can cover the outlay, then FRS will reimburse you)
We are not asking people to batch cook / prepare food, or to put together standard food parcels.
If you can help, please email me at jenny@nuni.co.uk
