After the Tsarist repressions of the 19th century, the Russian lands were transformed by Revolution, becoming the Soviet Union. The area still contained a major proportion of the Jews in the world. Their story remains an important chapter in Jewish history. 

David Farbey will give an account of their fate, full of hope, creativity and tragedy.

The sessions will be faciliated by David Jacobs, Jewish historian, Jewish genealogist and involved FRS member.

    Castaway Stories

    For several years, writer and FRS member Jessica Munk has captured the life stories and music of our Jewish community by interviewing ‘Castaways’ just as the BBC Radio 4 programme Desert Island Discs does. She will talk about why our family jokes, memories and songs need to be recorded for future generations, and why the Radio 4 programme’s format works so well for Jews.

    Righteous people seek justice, give charity to the poor and use their wisdom for good. BUT what about those who disagree with us about what is right, just or good? Can they be righteous or are they simply wrong? We will attempt to answer questions such as ‘Why people are divided by politics and religion?’. Janet Berenson is an FRS member and professional Jewish educator.
