Make Your Voice Count

Become a Deputy or Under‑35 Observer to the Board of Deputies

Do you care about the future of Jewish life in the UK?
Would you like to represent our synagogue, our values, and our community at a national level?
Can you help ensure Progressive and Reform Jewish perspectives are part of national discussions?

We are inviting members of our congregation to apply to become either a Deputy to the Board of Deputies of British Jews or an Under‑35 Observer. Both roles offer a meaningful opportunity to contribute, learn, and help shape the wider Jewish communal conversation.

Application deadline: Sunday 8th February

What is the Board of Deputies?

The Board of Deputies of British Jews is the democratically elected representative body of the UK Jewish community. It engages with government, parliament, the media, faith groups and wider civil society on issues that affect Jewish life in Britain.

Its work spans areas including:
- Community relations and interfaith dialogue
- Education and social justice
- Tackling antisemitism
- Israel–Diaspora relations
- Protecting religious freedoms

Deputies and Observers play a vital role in ensuring that the diversity, values and voices of British Jewry are heard clearly, thoughtfully and constructively.

Why Get Involved?

Whether as a Deputy or an Under‑35 Observer, this is a chance to:

- Represent our synagogue within the wider Jewish communal landscape
- Ensure Progressive and Reform Jewish perspectives are part of national discussions
- Engage with important issues affecting Jewish life today
- Develop skills in leadership, advocacy and collaboration
- Learn more about how Jewish communal decision‑making works at a national level
- Make a real, tangible contribution to the future of our community

Deputy or Under‑35 Observer – What’s the Difference?

Deputy: Full representative role with voting rights
Under‑35 Observer: Open to members under 35, Similar role and experience, but without voting rights

Both roles are voluntary, flexible, and designed to be compatible with work, family and other commitments.

Who Should Apply?

We are keen to hear from members with a wide range of backgrounds, experiences and perspectives. You do not need prior communal or political experience.

2. Be nominated by two members of the synagogue.
